[Training] Phoenix Application Security - Fully Remote, Friday September 1

When deploying your Phoenix application, it seems like there is a never ending list of security problems to worry about. XSS, CSRF, RCE, timing attacks, the list of acronyms and jargon goes on. How should you get started securing your Phoenix app? What is worth focusing on?

This training will be an introduction to the web application security concepts most relevant to Phoenix applications, common vulnerabilities, and recommended best practices. The open source project Potion Shop will be used for student labs.

1. Introduce web application security vulnerabilities, and how they occur in Phoenix applications.

2. Show vulnerable code in Elixir/Phoenix, and have students run the code locally to understand how it works.

3. Demonstrate tools to prevent and fix these vulnerabilities.

[Talk] Elixir Security: a Business and Technical Perspective - In-person @ ElixirConf

As Elixir adoption increases, companies have questions about the security of software developed in Elixir. Is it safe? Is Elixir more or less secure than other languages?

This talk will show why Elixir is an excellent choice for developing secure software. On the technical side, this talk will cover how Elixir developers can secure their applications. More people should be aware of several open-source tools (Sobelow, MixAudit, Exploit Guard) and learning resources (Potion Shop, ESCT in Livebook).

Executives and engineers alike should be aware of the security benefits of Elixir, and concrete examples will be given for both audiences.
